Breaking or Breakthrough?
The same moment where we feel so powerless is the exact place we discover his power.
There is often a moment when you are being tested when you don’t think you can go any further. As we continue in our season of fasting and “making space,” don’t be surprised if you find yourself at a breaking point, ready to give up!
Anytime we set out in faith, we should come to expect that this moment will find us. Acting in faith means that we are stepping into something that is beyond us. When we don’t have the strength or knowledge or ability— God does. We are expecting him to come through. However, we may not experience breakthrough until we’ve discovered the moment of breaking.
Let’s be honest. We don’t enjoy coming to the end of ourselves. It’s uncomfortable, and even painful to find our breaking point in reliance on God. But the same moment where we feel so powerless is the exact place we discover his power. That position of humility is where we find God’s provision and grace.
How do we not just quit in these moments? I’ve found two specific things that have helped me persevere until the breakthrough comes. First, be honest with others. If you are struggling, find a trusted friend and let them know what’s going on. One of the biggest traps is to fight our battles alone. Don’t do it! Share the challenge and watch God bring solutions and help you fight another day.
Secondly, ask for help. Seek out someone with experience or discernment. I’ve seen God work through all kinds of therapy, inner healing, counseling sessions, and groups as well as pastors, classes, and even books! In my journey, it took all of that and more, but if I wasn’t honest with someone and never asked for help, I’d still be stuck and probably would have quit long ago.
“Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30:5 NLT). I want to encourage you to persevere until your morning comes. Or, as Paul writes, “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Encourage yourself with these verses. Even as I’m writing this, I’m getting encouraged myself! Take some action toward hope and finish well.
